What is Immunity?

There are two basic types of immunity: active and passive.

If this exposure is to the actual disease, the resulting immunity is called natural immunity. If the exposure comes from the introduction of a killed or weakened form of the disease through the process of vaccination, the resulting immunity is called vaccine-induced immunity. When someone with immunity is exposed to that disease in the future, their immune system recognizes the elements of disease and immediately produces antibodies to attack it. Active immunity lasts a long time, sometimes for life.
Passive Immunity – Antibodies and Maternal Inheritance
Passive immunity occurs when a person is given the antibodies for a particular disease instead of their immune system producing them naturally. A person can get passive immunity from receiving immunoglobulin, or other blood products containing antibodies for the disease, but babies also gain passive immunity from their mothers through the placenta. While it can take several weeks for enough antibodies to be developed for active immunity, passive immunity has the added benefit of providing immediate protection.
